Formal Highland Dress
For
the bride, the traditional white wedding dress can suffice (with a possible
tartan sash over the shoulder). But for the groom (and any kilted
groomsmen) certain accessories are preferred with the kilt. Depending
on the formality of the wedding ceremony, the Prince Charlie Coatee or the
Argyll Jacket may be worn. Complete packages are available for purchase.
We also offer kilt outfits for rent. Please
The Scottish Tartan Wedding book above
has some wonderful information on formal Highland Dress. If you wish
to know more about your kilt and how to wear it, however, no resource is
more handy than So You're Going To Wear The Kilt! by J. Charles
Thompson, F.S.T.S. This is a very readable and very reliable handbook
on Scottish dress that answers most all of your possible questions.

All You Want to Know About
Tartan Dress by J. Charles Thompson

$12.95
paperback, 120 pages.
When ordering a custom-made kilt, please
remember that it takes a minimum of 8 weeks to receive your kilt.
Each kilt we sell is tailored to the specific measurements of the customer
in Scotland. The time it takes for our tailors to build your kilt,
and then have it shipped to the United States, is usually about 8 weeks,
but it can take longer. If you let us know the date of your wedding,
we will do all we can to have it for you in time. However, you don't
want to take risks with this important date. Please order your kilt
as soon as possible.
The Rings . . .
The Celtic knotwork ring has become very popular
for Scottish weddings both in the United States and in the UK. These
consist of rings with two or more strands woven together in an intertwining,
continuous pattern. Ancient celtic artists frequently used the knotwork
motif in their metalwork, stone carvings, and manuscript illuminations.
The interlocking patterns symbolized continuity and eternity. Each
of our rings is custom made at the time of purchase and laser cut with
the knotwork design, assuring a quality that is rarely seen elsewhere. Click here to see our Celtic band collection.
Suggested Engravings
If you wish to have your rings engraved, the
following Gaelic suggestions come from Scottish Tartan Weddings. (the Scottish Tartans Museum
does not engrave rings, but your local jeweler should offer this service
at a low cost.)
Is gradhaich leam thu -- "I
love you"
Is thu m'annsachd -- "Thou art my most
beloved"
Mo ghaol ort -- "My love with you"
Mo ghr'adh bithbhuan -- "My love forever"
Mo r'un geal dileas -- "My faithful
fair one"
Tha gaol agam ort -- "[My] love is
with you"

The two things that are most recognizable as Scottish
are the kilt and the bagpipes. Whether you want a single piper to
pipe your bride down the aisle, or you want pipes throughout the service
and at the reception, you will need to hire the services of a piper for
your wedding. If you are getting married in the Western North Carolina
/ Northern Georgia area, please contact Piper Jean Hayes at jewelmtn@dnet.net
for information. If you need assistance in locating a piper or pipe
band near your area, please contact us at the museum and we will be happy
to consult our listing.

“I do not prize the word 'cheap.' It is not a badge of
honor. It is a symbol of despair. Cheap prices make for cheap goods; cheap goods
make for cheap men; and cheap men make for a cheap country.” -- Wm. McKinley,
25th President of the United States, Scottish descendant.
