To Wear
the Kilt is My
Delight!
There is no
question about it. The best and most dramatic way for you to show your pride in
your tartan is to wear it in a kilt. We are dedicated to bringing you the
highest quality in craftsmanship. Each kilt we sell is entirely hand pleated,
hand stitched, and tailor made to your measurements by some of the finest and
most experienced Scottish kilt makers. These are the highest quality kilts
that money can buy -- we would not offer anything less.
There are many
options and varieties for your kilt. Below is a selection of our prices,
to give you an idea of what we offer.
Because each kilt is made to measure, and many options are
available as far as tartan, color scheme, kilt weight, and pleating, we are not
able to offer our kilts via a "one-click" shopping cart system. To order
your kilt, it is best to phone us at (828)524-7472 between the hours of 10am and
5pm Monday through Saturday, or email us at
tartans@scottishtartans.org for more information. We think it is
important to actually talk with you before ordering this heirloom item.
At the bottom of this page, you will find checklist of the information we will
need when you place your order.
The prices below are accurate for
most tartans. Please check here to
see lists of
available tartans in the various weight ranges. We always recommend purchasing the heaviest available
weight that is within your budget. We can have your kilt made in just
about any tartan! If you don't see it on our list, just ask us.
We can usually find it for you. This includes Regimental weight tartans, Irish
County tartans, "Old & Rare" tartans from The House of Edgar, and even tweeds.
Prices here given are for hip
measurements of 46" or less. If your size is greater, a surcharge will
apply. Please always call us to discuss the specifics of your kilt so that
we can quote you an exact price. The prices below are accurate for most
kilts available in most tartans. Again,
check our fabric listings to see examples of available tartans in different
weight ranges.

An inexpensive option intended for
casual wear, which can also be dressed up if needs be. Knife pleated and

4 YARD BOX PLEATED KILTS
The original tailored kilt of the
late eighteenth century, up through the middle of the nineteenth century, was
made from four yards of cloth and box pleated, rather than knife pleated.
Our own museum curator is now making this style of kilt, and it is a very good
option for both those seeking a less expensive kilt, as well as those looking
for a more historic garment. These kilts are made in North Carolina by
Matthew Newsome, from 100% worsted wool kilting cloth woven in Scotland.
Please allow approximately 16 weeks for delivery of these kilts.
Stock tartans, medium or heavy weight: $395.00
Custom woven tartans, heavy weight: $495.00
To place your order, we will need the following information
from you:
-
Your desired tartan -- this is most
important!
-
The style of kilt you are choosing
-
The desired weight of your cloth
-
Your waist measurement, taken at
your natural waist (just above your naval), snug
-
Your hip measurement, taken at the
widest part of your seat, loose
-
The length of your kilt. Have
someone else measure down the side of your hip from your natural waist (where
you took the first measurement) down to the top of your kneecap. You may
add or subtract about an inch, if you prefer a longer or shorter kilt, but
stay within this range.
-
Double take all measurements. We
will have your kilt made to the measurements you provide. We cannot be
responsible if the measurements you give us are not correct.
-
Give us your height and weight.
This helps in double-checking your measurements.
-
Do you want your kilt pleated to
sett or stripe? Pleating to
the sett is most common today, and means the pattern of the tartan is
reproduced in the pleats. Pleating to stripe, also called pleating to the
line, or regimental pleating, is common in the military and pipe bands, but
also looks good for civilian use. This is where a particular stripe from your
tartan is centered on each pleat. Depending on what stripe is chosen, this can
have different effects. Normally, we can pleat your kilt to whatever stripe
you specify. Standard eight yard kilts can be pleated either way.
Our casual kilts are pleated approximately to the sett, and the box pleated
kilts are typically pleated to stripe.
-
Do you have a deadline? Kilts
normally take 8 to 12 weeks to have made and delivered. Sometimes this can be
longer if the cloth is out of stock, but you will be notified.
-
Your shipment and payment
information. On all custom made goods, a 50% deposit is required at the time
you place the order. The remaining 50% is due when the kilt is ready to ship.
You may also choose to pre-pay up front.
Of course, if you have any other
questions, you are welcome to contact us. The staff of the Scottish Tartans
Museum gift shop is happy to answer any questions about your kilt.
