Historic Colors
|
Today, people are used to seeing tartans in modern and
ancient color schemes, and sometimes alternates such as weathered, muted,
reproduction, etc. "Modern" tartans are usually very dark.
"Ancient" tartans are usually very light. Historically, this was not
the case. In the eighteenth century, tartans were typically
made with a blend of lighter and darker shades. Of course most
tartans were being produced by local hand weavers being supplied yarn by
local hand spinners and dyers, therefore colors would naturally vary.
Major tartan weaving firm Wilsons of Bannockburn were
using standardized colors in their tartans since the last quarter of the
eighteenth century. Tartan scholar and hand weaver Peter MacDonald
has researched Wilsons of Bannockburn extensively and has been able to
recreate their standard colors. Today, Strathmore woolen mill is
producing four tartans in these historic colors in medium weight wool (13
oz). Kilts can be ordered in any of these below tartans at the
standard rate for medium weight kilts. (See
our kilt page for details). Cloth can be ordered using the
buttons below. |

In addition to the above range of tartans produced in
authentic Wilsons of Bannockburn colors, we are happy to also make
available the below range of medium weight (13 oz) tartans from Lochcarron
of Scotland's "Heirloom" line, which was inspired by the colors used in
nineteenth century silk tartans. Like the cloth above, kilts can be
had in any of these tartans for the standard medium weight pricing.

In addition to the historically
colored tartans above, the "muted" colors used by The House of Edgar are a
relative approximation of many eighteenth and nineteenth
century tartan samples, and would be a good choice for those wishing for a
tartan in a more historic color scheme than what is typically offered today.
You can view The House of Edgar's range, as well as tartans from other woolen
mills, through our tartan material order page. |
