Most of the major tartan mills in Scotland keep a stock of a few hundred different tartans. That meets most demand, and sounds like a lot -- until you realize that there are over 8000 unique tartans on record, and more being added each month! What do you do if your tartan is not available from stock? You could commission one of the large mills do weave a bolt of tartan cloth just for you. Or you could order your custom tartan from us in a small run - just enough to have your kilt or skirt made! Of course we are happy to accept larger orders, as well. But if you are simply trying to outfit yourself, not a pipe band, our small minimum lengths are much more economical. We have a variety of options available with our custom weave service. We are happy to advise as to the best option to suit your needs.
WORSTED WOOL: $60/yd
The traditional choice for kilts, skirts, and most tartan accessories. We have two weight options available, a heavy weight 16 oz ideal for men's kilts, as well as a lighter weight 12 oz more suitable for skirts and dancers' kilts. Both are twill weave, woven with a traditional kilting selvage. Minimum order is one yard of cloth. The material is 29" wide. Orders of 15 yards or more will be woven at 54" wide at the same cost per yard (meaning that you essentially get twice as much cloth for your money).
This is some of the softest, most luxurious silk available anywhere. It is woven using only primium raw silk thread, with fewer of the slubs (cocoon remnants) than typically seen in less expensive dupion silk, making it far softer by comparison. It is a twill weave, woven 30" wide. Minimum order is only one yard of cloth.
A special note about custom woven cloth:
When you place your order for any custom woven tartan, you will need to also pay for a mill set-up fee, below.
